Adolescence’s Stephen Graham Reveals How He Lost Golden Globe Award After Ceremony

This near-miss experience left Stephen Graham feeling like he'd been hit with a thousand punches. Indeed, the Adolescence star shared that he almost lost his Golden Globe trophy—which he won Best Male Actor for his role as Eddie Miller in the Netflix series—right after he left the Jan. 11 award ceremony.

"I had to go straight from L.A. to Madrid because I had to be on set the next day," Stephen, who co-created the limited series, revealed during his Jan. 19 interview on the Capital Breakfast radio show. "I had like 35 minutes to catch the plane. It's a next-level kind of thing. As I come off, a woman stood there with my name and she took me down the stairs, threw me in a car, and drove me across the airport runway."

Stunned by how quickly he was led towards the plane, the 52-year-old admitted he was worried his suitcase wouldn't "make it" on the flight with him. "I went, 'Excuse me, love? There's no way you're getting my suitcase on this plane if I'm in a car now,'" Stephen reflected on the conversation. "And she's like, 'Oh no, don't worry. We'll take care of it.' I was like, 'No, you don't understand,' and she went, 'I promise you, I promise you.' Anyway, it didn't land."

However, his golden accolade wasn't the only item that was left in his luggage. According to the Boardwalk Empire alum, he was also short of a pair of "socks, my pants, suit, shoes," and more personal accessories. Though a stressful moment, he confirmed his suitcase—and his well-deserved statue—eventually "turned up two days later."

This return was certainly a relief for Stephen, as this was his first Golden Globe win. Adolescence also secured four trophies at the ceremony, ranging from Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film to Owen Cooper (who plays Stephen's on-screen son Jamie) becoming the youngest actor to take home Best Performance.

And true to the show's success, Stephen thanked his castmates and the crew before highlighting his wife and producing partner Hannah Walter—with whom he shares two kids—for breathing life into such a heavy script. "I've said it before, but you saved my life. You saved my life," he told his wife during the heartfelt speech. "I love you to the moon and back forever. My dad, my pops, my hero, and I would just like to dedicate this particular award to my mom and all my friends and family, you all know exactly who you are. Without you, none of this is possible."

One thing that is possible is another season of Adolescence. As for when viewers can expect to see the series' next installment? "I cannot answer that question because it's somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind and Jack's mind," Stephen told Deadline at the 83rd annual ceremony. "We'll pull it out in three or four years, so stay tuned."
