Prime Video is venturing into the Lone Star State with its latest series acquisition. The Amazon-owned streaming platform has given a direct-to-series order for "Calamities," a Texas-set crime thriller from "Hunters" creator David Weil. Glen Powell is also among the executive producers (and will have a strictly behind-the-scenes role in the project). Amazon MGM Studios is producing.
"Calamities" brings Weil back to Prime Video, where in addition to "Hunters," he has worked on "Citadel" and the 2021 limited series "Solos." Amazon MGM is also producing "Tyrant," Weil's first feature film as writer-director.
The logline for "Calamities" reads, "After a drug deal explodes into violence, a quiet border town is thrust into a deadly collision course between a small-town sheriff looking for answers from her past, a sociopathic hit woman, an overly eager FBI agent, and a ruthless sect of the cartel."

Weil is the creator, writer, and showrunner of "Calamities." He and Natalie Laine Williams are executive producing via their Please Enjoy banner with Powell and Dan Cohen through their Barnstorm company.
"Calamities is the unique, character-rich thriller that doesn't blink," said Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios. "David Weil has crafted a story that knocks the wind out of you, and we're beyond excited to support him, Natalie, Glen, and Dan in bringing it to life on Prime."
The show is the latest producing credit for Powell, who's also involved with a "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series project at A24. He also exec produced the feature "How to Make a Killing" and is an EP of his Hulu series "Chad Powers." He's also co-writing a feature comedy called "The Comeback King" with Judd Apatow, due for release in 2027.
Weil and Please Enjoy are repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen. Powell and Barnstorm are repped by CAA, Johnson Shapiro, and Initiative PR.
