Jennifer Lawrence candidly confessed that she "had misgivings" about her long-time pal Emma Stone opting to shave her head for a role. Stone, now 36, underwent the drastic transformation for her part in Yorgos Lanthimos' thought-provoking film, "Bugonia." In a revealing Vogue cover story focusing on Stone, her 34-year-old friend Lawrence shared, "I genuinely didn't fancy the idea of her shaving her head."
"I had already been through the ordeal of witnessing Billie Jean King's haircut on screen," continued Lawrence, referring to Stone's portrayal of the legendary tennis player in the 2017 film "Battle of the Sexes." Despite her initial hesitation, Lawrence admitted, "To be honest, she looked stunning," adding that Stone "pulled it off effortlessly."
Stone herself embraced her bold new look with enthusiasm. "There's no better sensation in the world. The first shower post-shave? Oh my God, it's sheer bliss," she exuberantly told Vogue.
In "Bugonia," marking her fourth feature-length collaboration with 51-year-old director Lanthimos, Stone stars as a fictional pharmaceutical CEO who finds herself kidnapped by a pair of conspiracy theorists, portrayed by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis. This film serves as a reimagining of the 2003 South Korean classic, "Save the Green Planet!" Notably, Stone's head-shaving scene in the movie was captured in real time.
"Here we go—Emily has shaved her head," exclaimed Plemons, 37, adding with a hint of jest, "We'd better make this count!" Stone even shaved her director's head before filming the scene, and afterward, she became emotional upon seeing her bald reflection. Interestingly, Stone's mother, Krista Stone, had shaved her own head during her breast cancer treatment.
"My mom actually displayed immense courage," Stone told Vogue. "All I did was shave my head." She then shared, "My mom said, ‘I'm so envious. I wish I could shave my head again.’"
In 2023, Stone garnered her second Best Actress Academy Award for her performance in Lanthimos' Victorian Frankenstein-inspired film, "Poor Things." Lawrence was on stage alongside presenter Michelle Yeoh, who handed off the Oscar to Lawrence so she could present it to her cherished friend.
"True to Emily's form, as soon as we rushed off stage and dashed into the bathroom to scream and cry in delight," Lawrence recounted. "I whispered, 'Two-time Best Actress winner,' to which she replied, 'I feel like that's not quite right, though,'" she added.
"Bugonia" is set to hit theaters on October 31, promising a captivating cinematic experience.
