Perhaps it was time for a drastic change? Patrick Mahomes contemplated shaving off "every strand" of his hair in the wake of the Kansas City Chiefs' heartbreaking defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl – until his long-standing barber, DeJuan Bonds, intervened. Bonds, who has had the honor of styling Mahomes' locks for years, revealed to Us Weekly that he had to talk the 29-year-old quarterback out of an impulsive haircut driven by raw emotion.
"Throughout our years of collaboration, he's always trusted me to do my thing," Bonds shared with the outlet on Tuesday. "But when he suggested a change, his words were, 'Just buzz it all off.'"
"I quickly responded, 'Absolutely not. We're not going to go that extreme,'" Bonds continued. "Instead, we'd work together, gradually reducing the length. After some discussion, we agreed on a specific style and length. It was a true partnership on this latest cut."
Ultimately, the duo decided to bid farewell to Mahomes' iconic mohawk, opting for a sleek, shorter haircut. While Bonds acknowledged that the new look has evoked mixed reactions among fans, both he and the humble athlete were pleased with the final result.
Mahomes first unveiled his transformed appearance at his grandfather's funeral on February 17th, more than a week after the Super Bowl loss. Though he retreated from the public eye following the defeat, Mahomes ventured out for a romantic evening with his wife, Brittany Mahomes, on Monday night.
The high school sweethearts, who tied the knot in 2022, attended a college basketball game between Patrick's alma mater, Texas Tech, and Houston. Sitting courtside, the Mahomeses soaked in the action, though unfortunately, it ended in a loss for the Red Raiders.
Patrick showcased his new 'do in a red-and-black ensemble, complete with a branded varsity jacket. Fans flocked to the Instagram comments, hoping that his shorter look signaled a prosperous upcoming season. "He chopped the mohawk; the league's in trouble," one fan commented on the team's Instagram post. "His comeback will be legendary," another remarked.
Brittany, too, embraced the school colors, donning black jeans and a cropped red coat. The couple seemingly had a babysitter for the night, as their three children – Sterling, 4, Bronze, 2, and newborn Golden, 1 month – were nowhere to be seen at the event.
