KJ Apa is unveiling the pathway that led him to attain a prestigious title within his Samoan community. During an appearance on the Today show on August 13th, the Riverdale alumnus elaborated on his journey to becoming a Samoan chief in his native New Zealand village of Moata'a, unveiling a tradition that spans generations. "The title held by my father, Tupa'i, is an ancient one, deeply rooted in our family lineage," KJ explained. "He acquired it roughly five or six years ago, following in the footsteps of his own father, who bestowed it upon him upon his passing."

It was with immense excitement that the 28-year-old embraced the privilege of perpetuating this "magnificent tradition" when he was conferred the title of Savae chief in a ceremony held in 2022. "It is an honor bestowed upon me by my village as well," he remarked with fervor.

Yet, KJ, who co-parents his four-year-old son, Sasha Vai Keneti Apa, with his ex-partner Clara Berry, admitted that his acting career has somewhat preceded his duties as a chief in Moata'a. "I entrust all the responsibilities to my dad," the Map That Leads to You star quipped. "He steps in for me quite often."

Nonetheless, he honors his Samoan upbringing in myriad ways, adding, "I believe Samoans take immense pride in seeing me showcase my work on a global stage, and it fills me with amazement to be able to do so." Furthermore, KJ pointed out that he is not the sole actor representing the Samoan people in Hollywood, emphasizing that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is likewise a proud member of their community.

"KJ remarked, 'The Samoan community, though modest in size, is widespread indeed. Yet, their presence is truly ubiquitous.' He continued, 'Consider Dwayne Johnson, for example; he stands as a genuine emblem of their heritage.'"

While this marks the first time the I Still Believe actor has detailed the full narrative behind his chiefdom, he has been open about the gravity he attaches to this honor since receiving it in 2022. Sharing a snapshot of himself at the momentous ceremony on Instagram, KJ captioned it, "My mission is to serve my family and my village (Moata’a). Thank you, God."
