Stranger Things Season 5 Brings A Controversial Character Back After 8 Years

Published: Nov 27 2025

As the fifth season of "Stranger Things" premieres on Netflix, it's worth reflecting on the show's journey from its initial 34 episodes across four seasons. While not a sprawling narrative epic, it has amassed a devoted fanbase with stories that have captivated and, at times, frustrated audiences. One such instance of frustration lies in Season 2, Episode 7, titled "Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister," where Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) ventures to Chicago in search of Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) and others with special powers. It was a complete detour, with fans noting a lack of satisfying resolution. However, all that changes with Season 5.

In Episode 4 of the new season, titled "Chapter Four: Sorcerer," we see Eleven and Hopper (David Harbour) infiltrate the military base within the Upside Down. They enter a room behind a massive metal door to find Kali, hooked up to a colossal machine. While she remains silent, she reaches out a hand, which Eleven takes. This brief but powerful moment sets the stage for Kali's return, which has been one of the biggest unanswered questions from Season 2.

The idea of Eleven having a "sister" and a group of other superpowered individuals who understand her struggle is intriguing. Unfortunately, the actual content of "The Lost Sister" failed to capitalize on this potential. The other members of Kali's gang were largely uninteresting, serving mainly as aesthetic punk rock accessories. But Kali's return presents an opportunity to rectify a tease that has been building for eight years.

Various theories have circulated before the season's release, speculating whether Kali would be an ally or enemy to Eleven and her friends. With their grasp of hands, it seems their sisterly connection remains strong, suggesting she will choose to help Eleven and her friends, becoming a valuable ally. Kali's ability to create illusions could prove crucial in helping Eleven evade Dr. Kay and the military, as well as facing off against Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

Ultimately, Kali's presence in "Stranger Things" Season 5 could drive home a point that should have been apparent from Season 2: Kali and Eleven illustrate the impact of one's environment on their path in life. Kali turned to a life of crime with punks who were mostly interested in her powers, while Eleven found genuine friends who liked her for who she was. It's a lesson in nurture over nature. Perhaps, just maybe, Kali will sacrifice her life after realizing Eleven has friends she needs to return to.

"Stranger Things" Season 5, Volume 1 is now available on Netflix, offering fans a fresh start and new questions to ponder as they continue their journey into the Upside Down.
