Sydney Sweeney is not accepting any credit for the whispers about her love life. Despite the tidal wave of dating rumors that have swirled around her and her Anyone But You costar Glen Powell, the actress has denied any romantic relationship between the two, insisting they did not play up their chemistry to promote the 2023 romantic comedy.
"The press did it themselves," she told Variety in an interview published on October 27th. "There was no leaning in, per se." While the rumor mill was in overdrive during the promotional blitz for the movie, the 28-year-old - who was engaged to businessman Jonathan Davino at the time - said she and Glen, 37, kept things professional.
"The tabloids and journalists just created it and kept going," she continued. "Even if we were just standing next to each other, it was, 'They're standing two inches apart!'" But the absence of a romantic spark doesn't mean there's no love between Sydney and her scene partner.
"Glen and I genuinely care for each other and have a love and respect for one another," she explained. "I love being with him. And I think people just truly saw a really beautiful pairing." In fact, the Euphoria star revealed it wouldn't take much convincing to lure her and Glen back together for an Anyone But You sequel. "We are always open to it," she said. "I think that when the right concept and script come to Glen and I, we will jump in hand-in-hand."
While Sydney may not have accentuated her bond with Glen, the Twisters actor previously admitted that he and his costar were fully aware of fans' desire for them to be more than friends. "The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry," he told the New York Times in April 2024. "Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That's people wanting what's on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit - and it worked wonderfully."
However, it didn't work so wonderfully for Glen's ex-girlfriend Gigi Paris, whose relationship with the Top Gun: Maverick actor ended in 2023 after three years of dating. In June, she alleged that the rumors surrounding Glen and Sydney only added to the "issues" she and her then-partner were facing. "I just wanted respect, especially if it's gonna be public," she said on the Too Much podcast in June. "Don't make an ass out of me." As for Glen, he noted that his ex is entitled to her perspective on the matter. "I will always have nothing but love for her and respect for her," he told GQ in September. "Everybody's always going to have their own narrative on things and all that. And she's welcome to it."
