Bleecker Street has secured the esteemed privilege of distributing the iconic 1984 comedy cult-classic, "This Is Spinal Tap," along with its eagerly anticipated sequel, "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," across the United States. Both cinematic gems are helmed by the talented Rob Reiner, with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer reprising their legendary roles as members of the fictional English heavy metal band, Spinal Tap, in their latest adventure.
According to a synopsis provided by the producers, "Spinal Tap II" follows the band's reunion after a 15-year hiatus, culminating in one final, monumental concert. Set for a grand theatrical debut on September 12, "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" not only welcomes Reiner back in his on-screen guise as documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi but also boasts cameos from music legends Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood.
In a collective statement, Andrew Karpen, CEO of Bleecker Street, and Kent Sanderson, the company's president, expressed their deep honor in collaborating with Rob Reiner and the ingenious minds that crafted the original "This Is Spinal Tap." They remarked, "More than just a film, 'This Is Spinal Tap' stands as a cultural beacon, pioneering the mockumentary genre and leaving an indelible impression on both cinema and music. Revisiting this storied universe through 'Spinal Tap II' offers an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate its enduring legacy while crafting something fresh and exhilarating for both new admirers and loyal fans alike."
The sequel's star-studded cast also includes Paul Shaffer, Fran Drescher, Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman, and Chris Addison. Additionally, Bleecker Street plans a summer theatrical release for a meticulously restored edition of "This Is Spinal Tap," to be subsequently available for digital and streaming audiences.
Produced by Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matthew George, with financing provided by Castle Rock Entertainment, "Spinal Tap II" boasts executive producers Derrick J. Rossi, Hernan Narea, Jonathan Fuhrman, and Christopher H. Warner. The distribution agreement was masterfully brokered by John Burnham of Atlas Artists, alongside Kent Sanderson and Avy Eschenasy of Bleecker Street.
This reinvigorated venture promises to rock the cinematic world once more, paying homage to a timeless classic while introducing a bold new chapter in the storied history of Spinal Tap.
