We soon learn that Lily and Abby are twins. Lily is outgoing and currently dating Wes, while Abby is more focused on her studies. It's their final day of classes before exams, and Abby talks to their teacher, Mr. Rick Hansen, about getting accepted into a good university.
Abby worries that Lily and Eve won't be proud of her or understand why she wants to leave. Mr. Hansen praises her essay on the Romantics and encourages her to share the good news and get excited about exploring the big world. He also asks her to call him Rick now that they're about to end their teacher-student relationship. He then gifts her a novel and sends her on her way.

Meanwhile, Abby returns home safely in the rain. Her mother inquires about the fight with Lily, but Abby denies it. They all go to sleep, only to be awakened by Abby in the middle of the night, reporting that Lily is missing.
The next morning, Eve calls the police to report Lily's disappearance. The case is assigned to Tommy and Rachel, who interview Eve and Abby about their last encounters with Lily. However, Abby is reluctant to reveal the full extent of their fight or the drugs at the hangout, fearing that Lily's disappearance might be her fault.
Tommy informs them that they've found Lily's phone, but the forensics team is still examining it. He also notes that they've cleared Wes after confirming his movements. Following Tommy's advice, Eve makes a public appeal for information about Lily's disappearance.
Rick sees the news from his house and continues to maintain his composure in front of his wife, even defending Lily when she suggests she might have run away. As the search for Lily intensifies, the police seek the public's help to search the forest. Rick inserts himself into the search and shares ideas with Tommy, while also trying to make Abby suspicious of Wes. Unfortunately, the search yields no results.
The scene cuts to Lily waking up in a cabin, one of her legs tied to a chain on the floor. Rick returns to the cabin after acting like a concerned citizen at the search and mocks Lily. She tries to scream for help, but he laughs in her face and tells her no one can hear her.
Returning home, Eve's anguish and frustration boil over into drinking, lashing out at Abby for Lily's disappearance. Abby, deeply troubled, takes a walk and encounters Wes. She confronts him for not helping with the search and allowing Lily to wander off alone. He apologizes and asks her to tell the truth about the drugs to the police. However, Abby fears that the police will use the drugs as an excuse not to search for her sister. As she walks back home, she runs into Rick, who offers her a ride. Once again, he plays the role of a concerned teacher, trying to shift the blame onto Wes. But Abby defends him. Thankfully, he safely drops her off at home.
