The seventh episode of Season 3 of "Invincible" kicks off with a nostalgic glimpse into the past, where Angstrom, a disheveled wreck, is meticulously repaired by the enigmatic Technicians. Months leap by like pages in a book, and a rejuvenated Angstrom emerges with a sinister mission: to ensnare multiversal variants of Mark into his malevolent fold. It becomes evident that these alternative Marks, emboldened by their unparalleled strength, have succumbed to darkness in ways both grim and grand. With Angstrom's assistance, they breach into our realm through various interdimensional portals, unleashing chaos upon the world.
The situation grows dire as these multitude of Invincibles turn their menacing gaze upon our Mark, prompting an influx of heroes to converge upon the prison grounds, engaging in fierce battles. Oliver, eager to contribute, pleads his case to Debbie, who, after some hesitation, reluctantly grants his wish but imposes a strict condition: he mustn't return home until the turmoil ceases.
Meanwhile, Cecil dives deep into the investigation, uncovering the startling revelation that there are eighteen different Invincibles in existence. Though a glimmer of hope shines faintly—they seemingly lack the formidable might of our Mark—Cecil knows that assembling every hero at his disposal is crucial for this impending confrontation. Yet, despite their valiant efforts, the heroes find themselves outmatched by the sheer strength of these alternate Marks, standing as a testament to the gravity of the challenge ahead.
In the midst of the carnage, Rex bid farewell to Shrinking Rae as she departed from the Guardian HQ, a move perhaps fortuitous given the timely arrival of Mark's variants. Steadfastly holding his ground, Rex allowed the others to flee, sacrificing himself to procure them a precious moment of respite. Upon witnessing the explosion, Shrinking Rae's heart sank, realizing the direst fate had befallen Rex. Eve too was injured, leaving Mark consumed by sorrow, sitting beside her, unmoved by the ongoing battle, despite Cecil's earnest pleas.
As for the fray, not all of Mark's variants emerged victorious. The heroes put up a spirited fight, managing to fell several of them. Nevertheless, within the span of three days, the planet bowed before the mercy of these relentless variants.
Angstrom soon made his presence known, instructing his variants to bring "our Mark" to him. When they defied his command, he conjured a multitude of portals and dispatched them elsewhere. Left solely with Angstrom to confront, "our Mark" stepped forward, and the duo engaged in combat. Possessing intimate knowledge of Angstrom's tricks, Mark was cautious of his deadly portals. However, the sheer multitude of robotic drones at Angstrom's disposal rendered him a formidable adversary.
Despite surmounting the swarm of flying drones, Mark hesitated to slay Angstrom, especially when Oliver appeared, goading him on. Seizing the opportunity, Angstrom retreated, albeit not before losing his arm. Yet, Angstrom faced graver concerns. He had struck a deal with the Technicians, the same Beings who had reassembled him, which he had failed to uphold. Consequently, he was now indentured to their service.
Back on Earth, rescue missions have commenced in a desperate bid to save whatever survivors remain, yet the outlook remains grim. The toll of casualties has climbed into the hundreds of thousands, with projections suggesting a tripling of that figure. At the hospital, Mark bears witness to this harrowing scene, sitting vigilantly at Eve's bedside, clinging to the slim hope of her recovery. Cecil arrives to offer him solace, reminding Mark that they will rebuild from the ashes, uncovering fresh talents, and reassembling their teams with unwavering determination. With Cecil's gentle persuasion, Mark is eventually convinced to venture out and lend a hand in the rescue efforts, where Oliver is already laboring tirelessly.
Powerplex is also present, his heart-wrenching tirade blaming Invincible for the catastrophe resonating uncomfortably with those around him. Though they seem to implicitly share this sentiment, they remain silent as Powerplex is apprehended after having his powers depleted. Immortal, too, has had enough of battle and seizes the moment to confess his desires to Kate, proposing the start of a family together. Meanwhile, Darkwing remains missing and feared dead, while Monster Girl battles for her life in intensive care. Most of their fellow heroes lie incapacitated, and as we are all too aware, Rex has fallen. The only viable solution that presents itself is for Mark to step up and lead the Guardians.
Mark rejects the notion vehemently, but Cecil insists that they remain united in their purpose. He offers his support should Mark ever seek solace, and despite his tough exterior, Mark offers a heartfelt thank you. For now, however, his duty lies in the grim task of clean-up. That is, until Conquest arrives on the scene, sparking an immediate confrontation between the two.
