In the opening of Episode 9 of Landman season 2, the Norris household is thrown into chaos. The offshore drill operation is about to commence, leaving Nate and Tommy on the phone, liaising constantly. Meanwhile, Rebecca visits Charles' house and attempts to reason with him. She eventually apologizes and admits that she's lonely and smitten. Rebecca doesn't want to lose Charles, even if they disagree sometimes.

Charles reminds her that he'll be at the offshore rig for the next six months, but they're determined to try and make this work. At the same time, Cooper heads out with Boss and the others to make a crucial decision about where the next drill should go. Boss disagrees on the placement, but this is Cooper's crew, and he's calling the shots here. Eventually, he concedes, and they get to work.
After a lengthy goodbye with Angela, Ainsley is dropped off at the dorms for cheerleading camp. Paygin, their new roommate, uses they/them pronouns, is vegan, and has a pet ferret too - it's literally the worst roommate situation possible. It doesn't go well. Angela shows up and saves the day when Ainsley calls her in tears. She decides to move the entire cheerleading squad to a brand new apartment, rented out for the fall.
Back home, Cheyenne shows up for her aqua therapy session with T.L.. Late at night, she reveals that her name is actually Penny and they talk about dreams and plans.
The main crux of the drama finally lands back on the oil rigs again, and there's quite the spectacle for the rig launch. There's obviously a lot riding on this, and Cami wants to go all out to make it a big deal. She's convinced that she might as well celebrate if they're going to take such a big risk.
As Cami ventures away from the group, she proudly proclaims that she's experiencing a surge in her business that she's eager to embrace fully. In stark contrast, Tommy, who has felt this rush once before and almost lost everything, is more cautious than ever. His heightened vigilance stems from his past experience, and Cami's differing perspective eventually leads to their rift, culminating in Tommy's dismissal for being risk-averse - a very real concern that Dan had previously warned him about. Now that he's out, it spells trouble for the future of M-Tex.
Meanwhile, back at the bar, Johnny launches an attack on Ariana. Just as Cooper arrives to check on her, he witnesses the assault and promptly intervenes, brutally subduing Johnny in a fit of rage and protection.
