The episode begins with Malcolm, now the head of a food bank charity, standing proudly in front of a backdrop of shelves filled with donated goods. He's a single dad to his teenage daughter, Leah, whom he's kept away from his family. Malcolm asserts that the key to his success and a fulfilling life is staying as far away from his family as possible. He recalls how his parents and siblings used to rile him up without reason, bringing out the worst in him. He explains that he maintains minimal contact through cards, emails, and video calls, while keeping Leah and his girlfriend, Tristan, completely separate from them.

Meanwhile, Hal and Lois, Malcolm's parents, are speaking to Dewey over a video call. Dewey, now a successful pianist touring Europe, informs them that he won't be able to attend their 40th wedding anniversary. He also speaks to his youngest sibling, Kelly, a non-binary teenager living at home.
Later, Hal and Lois are at the supermarket where Hal surprises Lois with an a cappella performance alongside The Gentlemen Callers. They sing "Locked Out of Heaven" by Bruno Mars, which makes things awkward for Lois. She tells Hal she wants to take control of their 40th anniversary as his grand gestures have become overwhelming.
In private, Hal tells the group that he has planned more surprises leading up to the anniversary. Back at the house, Reese is once again changing the bathroom tiles, which Hal points out as unnecessary. Reese explains that working on these projects with his father makes him feel like he's getting his life back together, which touches Hal.
Elsewhere, Malcolm returns home and finds Leah crying in her room. She reveals that she was invited to a classmate Alison's birthday party as a joke, meant to mock her. Malcolm tries to console her, but Leah blames him for coddling her, which she believes has made her an easy target at school.
Just as the scene unfolded, Malcolm received a voice message from Lois, reminding him about the anniversary party and earnestly inviting him to attend. He shared that he had already drafted an email declining the invitation. The next day at school, Leah made an awkward comment to her friend Cheyenne, who was already in a panic over her unfinished homework. Leah tried to brush it off with a laugh, but was later summoned to the school office for unintentionally hurting Cheyenne's feelings.
That night, Malcolm was at Tristan's apartment, where they discussed Tristan's upcoming meeting with Leah. Tristan felt nervous, and although Malcolm tried to reassure her, he could see the anxiety in her eyes as well. The next morning, Malcolm gave Leah a list of topics he wanted her to discuss with Tristan. Leah tried to calm him down, but he was interrupted by an urgent message from Kelly.
Malcolm answered the call and learned that Kelly had tricked him into responding. They asked him to come to the anniversary party, saying their parents missed him. Malcolm refused, claiming he was too busy, and quickly ended the conversation. At the family home, Lois was stressed while planning the party. Francis and Piama helped Reese and Hal pack party favors for the guests. Lois criticized Francis, leading to an argument, until Kelly announced that Malcolm would not be attending.
Back at Malcolm's house, he introduced Tristan to Leah. The two hit it off immediately, but their moment was interrupted when Hal and Lois unexpectedly arrived. Leah was shocked to learn that her grandparents were alive, while Hal and Lois were stunned to discover that Malcolm had a teenage daughter that he had kept from them.
The episode ended with Malcolm being confronted by Leah, Tristan, Hal, and Lois. Overwhelmed by the chaos, he ran out of the house to escape.
