Sins of Kujo – Season 1 Episode 3 1

Karasuma brings up the plan with Kujo and what will happen to Mr. Sogabe afterwards. Kujo reveals that as a lawyer, he can only help with the case. Outside of it, only his loved ones can help Mr. Sogabe. This strikes a chord in Karasuma and he visits his mother. We see that she has become a shell of herself, barely going out. She feels guilty for living her life while her husband is dead and Karasuma does his best to change her mind.

Once Kanemoto is released, Mibu thanks Kujo and ends the call by reminding the lawyer that they will stay in touch should he need another favor. Afterwards, he forces one of the thugs to take the fall for something. As for Karasuma, he continues to look out for Mr. Sogabe. He asks Mr. Sogabe to house his son once he is out so he can escape Kanemoto. We learn that Mrs. Sogabe is dead and Karasuma wonders if she truly hated her son. Mr. Sogabe reveals that it is all a misunderstanding.

A flashback shows Mr. Sogabe seeing his mother crying and looking away when he falls during a race for sports day. This makes him think that she is embarrassed of him. But Mr. Sogabe shares that she was actually crying happy tears on seeing him trying to complete the race and was cheering him on.

Karasuma visits Mr. Sogabe in prison and shares this information. Mr. Sogabe tears up and when Detective Arashiyama makes him a deal, he takes it. He decides to get his shameful tattoo removed and testify against Kanemoto.

A while later, Mibu receives a shocking call and ends Kanemoto's life by drowning him. Kujo informs Karasuma that Arashiyama and Sogabe framed the testimony in such a way that Mibu's mole believed Kanemoto was a snitch. Karasuma is conflicted as he hates that Sogabe had to resort to such lengths to save himself. To celebrate the good news, Mr. Sogabe brings the lawyers food. Kujo has waived off any interest, allowing Mr. Sogabe to pay his lawyer fees in installments. Mr. Sogabe also reveals that Kanemoto's father came to apologize and has turned into a pitiful mess.

Elsewhere, the detectives on the case are hanging out, and Arashiyama reveals that he knows Mibu is involved. While he is clean on paper, unofficially, he runs a nightclub that belongs to the Fushimi-gumi, a Yakuza gang. He also does odd jobs for other gangs and collects favors. Arashiyama also knows that he has Kujo handle all legal cases for him.

It's a new day, and we see that Kujo has adopted Kanemoto's dog, Black Thunder. It's Rino's birthday, but he's not allowed to see her. It's also his father's death anniversary, and he visits the family grave. Kujo's estranged brother shows up and kicks him out. Through the brother's rant, we learn that Kujo has been disowned for his ideals.

Right then, Kujo's superior, Attorney Yamashiro calls him. Yamashiro seems to be a family friend and sees Kujo as his son. However, he is also lecherous and corrupt, defending a criminal like Sugawara who uses his nursing home to run fraudulent schemes.

Yamashiro and Kujo drink, and the former looks down upon Sugawara. Kujo is surprised as he has been taught to always side with his clients. In response, Yamashiro declares that they have no clue what it is to be a defense attorney.

The next day, there's a new client - Hanae Iemori. Her father had dementia and lived in a nursing home. Before he died, Sugawara and Yamashiro convinced him to leave his estate to an association called Kikogi. No lawyer will take up her case, so Mibu recommends Kujo. She is upset when Kujo refuses her as well.
