The narrative then shifts back to 1997, when Rachel's parents were traveling and planning their wedding. Rachel's mother was heavily pregnant at the time, and the couple stopped at a rest stop similar to the one Rachel and Nicky visited. Jay, Rachel's father, was using his camera to document their trip. They joke about the baby's name, and Alexandra mentions that she had a dream in which the child's name was Rachel.

The couple stops by Larry's frozen custard shop, and Alexandra gets a strange vibe from the place. She insists on leaving before Larry can finish their order, starting to cry and saying that she feels they will die if they eat the custard. Jay tries to calm her down by agreeing to leave.

They finally arrive at their cabin and settle in. Alexandra once again speaks of the feeling of dread and déjà vu she feels. She describes a dream in which she is struggling to tell Rachel something while the song "You Are My Destiny" by Paul Anka plays in the background. Jay insists that her mother's delusions are causing these feelings and reassures her that they love each other and will be fine.

In the afternoon, Alexandra tries to ignore the feeling of being watched and the sense of dread that she can't shake off.

The couple, Alexandra and Jay, prepared for their intimate wedding and made their way to the church, where they met the priest and the witness. The witness asked Alexandra if she was certain that Jay was the one for her. She found this odd but continued with the ceremony. The pair exchanged their vows and were officially married. They returned to the cabin and danced, recording the memories for their child. Suddenly, Alexandra began to bleed from every orifice on her body. The haemorrhage worsened, and Alexandra fell to the floor as Jay struggled to call for help. The scene shifted to three minutes later, with Alexandra struggling to talk as she bled to death. She kept repeating, "You have to tell her that it’s real." Jay begged her to stay with him as they waited for help. However, time was of the essence. He performed emergency surgery to save Rachel and kept apologizing to Alexandra as he cut her stomach open.

We now reunite with Rachel at the cabin. It turns out that the man who kidnapped her was Jay, her father. She watched the video of her mother's death with fascinated horror. She was furious that Jay had lied to her all these years. Jay revealed that Alexandra had been feeling dread leading up to the wedding. He believes that Rachel is feeling the same thing. He went on to tell her that death is chasing her after her engagement. Although she didn't invite him, he received an invitation. This is when we learn that he is the one behind the warning letter Rachel received. He believes he is protecting her from the curse of her mother's family.

Before he could elaborate further, Jules stormed into the cabin, armed with a gun. He insisted that Jay was the Sorry Man. The cabin brought back memories for Jules of his own traumatic past when he was eight years old. He had argued with Nicky and fled home, finding refuge in the cabin where he hid under the bed. As he watched, Alexandra began to bleed, and Jay sliced her up to save Rachel. At the time, he had believed Jay had killed his wife. Before Alexandra's death, she had seen Jules and begged him to tell her daughter that the curse was real. Her last words were, "Are you sure he is the one?"

As Jay and Jules engaged in a physical altercation, Rachel stormed off and drove back to the Swan Dive Bar. She found the old man, who demanded an apology for stabbing him. In retaliation, he stabbed her in the leg with a fork. She was surprised that he knew her name and demanded to know the truth. The old man told her the story of a man who died before he could marry his beloved bride. Desperate, the bride begged Death to help her. Death agreed to resurrect the man, but only if the woman was certain her betrothed was her true soulmate. The woman insisted he was, and Death brought the man back to life.

The problem was that Death never revealed the true consequences of the deal. All the children born from this fated union carried a curse that only allowed them to marry their soulmate or face death. Eventually, it was the old man's turn to marry. He wanted to marry a woman named Marianne, but after meeting with the witness, he refused out of fear. The curse then spread to Marianne, and a few years later, she married a man named Thomas Larkin. The curse then spread to the Larkin family, and now it was Rachel's turn.

The old man introduced Rachel to Death and reminded him that there were only two days left. He explained that the curse had made him immortal and that he had been tasked with overseeing all weddings in the Larkin family. He tried to warn each member of the family before they got married by asking, "Are you sure he is the one?" He showed Rachel the contract of the curse, which stated that she had to marry her soulmate before sunset on her wedding day. If Nicky wasn't her soulmate, she would die. If she refused to marry Nicky, she would become the next immortal witness, and the curse would spread to Nicky's family.

Jay and Jules arrived, and Jay immediately recognized the old man as the witness from his own wedding with Alexandra. Rachel asked Jay to talk to him and get some closure before going home. She felt hurt that he had chosen to cope with his pain in a way that caused her pain and left with Jules. On her way out, she found a pin with the Oldie's slogan.

On their ride back, both Jules and Rachel tried to process their trauma. He asked if she believed in the curse, and she responded that she did.
