In the fifth episode of The Copenhagen Test, we're transported back to 1989 in Fairfax, Virginia. It's revealed that Hale's parents were the unintended casualties of Victor's mission in China. Victor helped them resettle and obtained all necessary documents for them. At the time, Hale's mother was pregnant, and Victor made a solemn vow to protect their child.

Fast forward to the present, Hale sneaks to a no-signal zone along his train station route. There, he records a video for Victor, narrating everything that has transpired since he discovered the biohack. He opens up about his paranoia, his frustrations with the Orphanage, and his unwavering loyalty to the country.
Later, he meets with Michelle but acts strangely. Ellie and Parker notice that something is off with him. Meanwhile, the Orphanage is using Hale to set a trap for the lone wolf. They know he's watching, and they put on a convincing performance of searching for the hard drive.
The Orphanage assigns Hale and Remy to retrieve the hard drive from a theatre in Paris. Moira wants Hale to lead the lone wolf directly into the trap. They set up the mission as if it were real. However, in a separate briefing in the secure area, Moira gives Hale more information. They also give him modified low-dose compounds of drugs to incapacitate the lone wolf and bring him in alive. Moira makes it clear that the lone wolf interrogation will be above Hale's pay grade.
At the secure briefing, Parker warns Moira that something has changed in Hale. He's not talking to Michelle, and no one knows why. Moira asks if they should pull out of the mission, but Parker refuses. St George introduces herself to Hale and later tells Moira that she thinks he's up for the mission.
Ahead of the mission, Hale shows up at Michelle's place unannounced. Fortunately, Parker already gave her a heads-up. Once Hale arrives, he breaks up with her. Fearing for her safety, Michelle goes into hiding, retrieves her passport from the cemetery, and hides at the church.
Hale then meets with Rachel and apologizes for never letting her in. Parker becomes increasingly concerned about Hale's behavior and Michelle's disappearance. She promises Moira that she will fix things.
With this newfound insight into Hale's past and present struggles, we're left wondering what will happen next as he embarks on this dangerous mission for the Orphanage. Will he be able to fulfill his promise to protect the country while also keeping his personal life intact? Only time will tell.
She locates Michelle and assures her that the mission is still very much alive. Michelle remains skeptical, knowing that once the mission is complete, they will kill her. Nonetheless, she agrees to return to her place. Simultaneously, Remy retrieves Hale, and they depart for Paris.
Parker returns to the office and reassures Moira that everything is in order. They focus their attention on the Paris mission, where Hale and Remy successfully retrieve the hard drive. However, Schiff kills their extraction agent and replaces him. Back in the US, the team anxiously watches, trying to get a clearer view of the mysterious lone wolf leading Hale and Remy to the extraction point.
After an eternity-like wait, Schiff looks directly at a camera, and they start facial recognition. St George quietly exits the room as soon as she sees Schiff’s face. In the meantime, his details come back as classified.
Back in Paris, we realize that Cobb has joined forces with the CIA to bring in Hale, whom he considers a mole. Once Hale realizes that Schiff is the lone wolf, he drugs Remy and tries to take custody of Schiff. Just then, the CIA team starts rolling in, allowing Schiff a chance to escape.
The shoot-out slows Hale down, and Cobb spots his beloved uncle on the monitoring screen. He quickly leaves his post to find him, but Schiff is shocked to see the guy and asks if anyone knows they are related. Confused, Cobb says no. Schiff is about to shoot him when Hale jumps in and saves him. He gets a chance to escape during the showdown between the Orphanage and the CIA operatives.
Without skipping a beat, Hale shoots at Schiff as he gets into a car and drives off. Cobb starts explaining, but Hale hands him the hard drive and orders him to hand it over to the Orphanage. Meanwhile, the Orphanage is scrambling to find out what is happening. Hale initially put the hard drive in a Faraday cage so they couldn’t trace it. In the meantime, Hale traces Schiff to a basement with no signals at an abandoned building.
The scene cuts to Michelle finding a message in her book. In the message, Hale asks her to get out clean before things take a turn for the worse. We then see St George looking up Schiff’s name in her old book. It seems they have history and might have met in Berlin back in 1989. At the office, Parker becomes more frustrated. Victor finally gets the video Hale left behind and watches everything.
The episode ends with Hale finding Schiff preparing tea inside a secret kitchen in the basement. Schiff knows that Hale won’t shoot him since he is the only one who can offer him answers. He suggests they talk.
