In the opening of Episode 8 of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4, Mickey is depicted as angry and frustrated, confined to his solitary cell. Maggie informs Lorna that the jail is under lockdown due to a riot, and she's heading there to gather more details. Lorna has filed an emergency motion to speak with the judge, which is granted promptly. Lorna and Maggie meet with Dana, Stone, LAPD counsel, and an assistant sheriff to discuss Mickey's safety. The assistant sheriff informs them that Mickey is in solitary confinement, and they fear they cannot guarantee his safety. Maggie advocates for his release, but Dana vehemently opposes this move. Maggie even questions Mickey's safety in the SHU. Although it's a back-and-forth battle, Judge Stone grants the request to remove Mickey from jail to house arrest, a move Dana reluctantly agrees to.

Lorna and Izzy dive into Carter's case. After reviewing the liquor store's footage, they note that the shooter shot down the security upon entry. Lorna is worried that only Carter knew the location of the camera, which complicates his case. Cisco and Lorna finally make up after their heated argument, and Cisco continues to follow up with Gazarian in Palm Springs.
Back in the courtroom, Mickey and Maggie are surprised when Dana introduces ballistic expert Mr. Russo on the stand. He claims that Mickey used a suppressor on the gun, which could prevent neighbors from hearing gunshots if he killed Sam in his garage. Meanwhile, during Carter's case, a private security guard testifies that he arrived at the scene and administered CPR to the victim. The victim also mentioned Carter's name. Lorna argues that it's impossible for that to have happened. Izzy walks out and goes to work on something concerning Mickey's case.
Back to Mickey's case, he spots Drucker in the courtroom and assumes he's next on the stand. They get a surprise when Dana calls her next witness, Jessica Westfeldt, who was an intern for Mickey's law firm. Lorna had hired her. Jessica says that Mickey represented Sam in a fraud case. Elsewhere, Izzy meets Dr. Schultz in disguise to gather more information on Biogreen and biofuel. However, she quickly comes clean and asks for his help. Back in the courtroom, Jessica recalls when Sam said that he'd be dead if he didn't pay his investor. Instead, Mickey responded, "If you don't pay us, you're dead." Dana claims that this was a direct threat to Sam to establish financial gain as a motive.
Jessica also claims that she stopped working for the law firm since she felt scared. Considering that Jessica was fired from the law firm, Maggie alleges that she could be testifying in retaliation against Mickey.
Later, Mickey and Maggie shared a dinner at home, pondering the reason behind Dana's decision not to invite Drucker to the stand. Their concerns were heightened as they feared that Dana might have realized the weakness of the financial motive in holding the case and was planning a surprise in court. Jack's call came, but Maggie ended it abruptly. The next day, Cisco went to serve Gazarian with the subpoena, but he fled with the help of Jeanine, who posed as a maid. In their rental car, Cisco chased Gazarian and eventually caught up with them. After a long chase, he found them at a hotel and served them the papers.
In court, Dana brought Drucker to testify about the email they found during the search of Mickey's office. Mickey claimed that he had never seen the said email. Drucker added that he believed Mickey's motive was to murder Sam for financial gain, pointing out bills and a bounced cheque that indicated Sam had tried to avoid paying legal fees. Mickey handled the cross-examination, stating that he had helped Drucker with the search of his files at the office and storage facility. However, Drucker dropped a bombshell when he revealed that they also found an email on the server about the fraudulent organization set up by Sam Scales. This revelation further strengthened the financial motive.
Back in Carter's case, Rashad testified that Carter had a gun. Lorna questioned Rashad's certainty that it was Carter who killed Gary, using the concept of confirmation bias to cast doubt on what Rashad believed he heard and saw. In the office, Izzy seemed excited about the potential breakthrough in Mickey's case. She explained to Lorna that Dr. Schultz would testify about the Biogreen scam. Lorna was a bit frustrated with Carter's case, considering that the security guard claimed that the victim had mentioned Carter's name before he died.
Cisco texted Mickey that the subpoena had been successfully served. He then called Lorna, informing her that Gazarian wasn't afraid of the subpoena but was afraid of "them." In a dramatic twist of events, Gazarian fatally fell from the hotel room. Cisco was shocked but more convinced that Gazarian was running from something other than them.
