As the curtains rise on the second installment of "The Tourist," a vigilant train guard detects tendrils of smoke curling from one of the carriages. He raps on the door, commanding its occupant to unveil the source. Elliot (portrayed by Jamie Dornan) swings the door open, preemptively announcing Helen (Danielle Macdonald) as his girlfriend. Both protest their innocence regarding any marijuana smoking. The guard unearths a lighter, its front etched with the words "Vietnamese and gay," and after expressing his offense, admonishes them against smoking, subsequently inquiring about Elliot's beard. With the door firmly shut once more, Elliot retreats to the bed alongside Helen, vowing to shave his beard upon their Cambodian arrival. He asserts their invincibility, to which Helen, clutching a letter meant for Elliot but delivered to the police station during his hospital stay, wonders if he is absolutely certain. The letter contains a snapshot of Elliot alongside Tommy, prompting Helen to believe it's high time they uncovered his true identity.
Soon, they find themselves at Sclata Café, Helen engrossed in reading about Ireland while awaiting an enigmatic figure. A man approaches, utters a greeting, and melts back into the crowd. Elliot speculates it could have been Tommy. Agreeing to dispatch with his beard instantly, Elliot heads to the restroom, leaving Helen to engage with a child attempting to retrieve a wayward ball, though the boy remains unresponsive to her calls. Meanwhile, Elliot is ambushed by two masked assailants within the confines of the lavatory. Overpowered, he's hurled into the back of a van.
Helen, sensing something amiss, searches for Elliot and discovers traces of a scuffle. Trapped in the van, Elliot seizes a shard of glass, attempting to free his bound hands and break through the rear door, unnoticed by the loud music-blasting occupants upfront. Seizing his moment, Elliot slips out of the van's back just as the men turn to pursue him. Narrowly escaping as the van stalls, Elliot trips over a rock and tumbles down a hill.
Elsewhere, Detective Ruairi Slater (played by Conor MacNeill) weeps in a bathroom stall when a knock interrupts his solitude. He learns of an Australian woman's recent arrival, speaking of an abduction near Sclata Café. Slater swiftly removes his ring, casts it into the toilet, and retrieves it, perhaps signaling a premeditated disguise. Meanwhile, Elliot struggles to catch a signal on his phone, the stakes rising with each passing second.
The van creeps up on him from behind, signaling the resumption of the chase. This encounter ends with Elliot being violently propelled to the ground. As they seize him, he inquisitively asks if they serve under Kosta's command, demanding to know what crime he has committed. Ultimately, they render him unconscious. Detective Slater crosses paths with Helen, who frantically informs him that her boyfriend, Elliot, has vanished without a trace. Slater harbors suspicions that someone other than Tommy orchestrated their meeting through an anonymous tip. Helen, her voice trembling with worry, insists that Elliot is in grave danger before pleading with Slater to inspect the scene. Together, they scrutinize the bathroom, where Helen points out the vehicle's parking spot and its escape route.
Elliot awakens in a dimly lit room, the sight of a boar carcass nearby sending shivers down his spine. Affixed to it is a note, urging him to open it. Desperation clawing at him, he pounds on the door and screams for release. Inside the boar's belly, Elliot discovers a key, which he promptly uses to unlock his chains. Shortly after, he stumbles upon a baby monitor, just as a disguised voice taunts him, asking if he's enjoying himself. The menacing figure reveals that his voice will be the last Elliot ever hears.
Helen confides in Detective Slater about Elliot, her voice laced with self-blame for his abduction. Slater reassures her that they will locate him. Back at the police station, Helen is bombarded with messages inquiring about her whereabouts with Elliot and when she plans to return home. A call from Ethan Krum (Greg Larsen) interrupts her turmoil. He recalls her words as a wake-up call and admits his past behavior's impact on her, expressing a desire to make things right. However, Helen abruptly ends the call.
Slater informs Helen that while DNA results from the bottle are pending, there has been a significant development. He requests a private conversation before revealing any details. They then interview Niamh Cassidy (Olwen Fouere), who received an unprompted photo of Elliot. To their astonishment, she reveals herself as his mother. Elliot is granted the option to leave the room, but the exit is guarded by a grim ultimatum: amputation of his legs. When Elliot defiantly refuses, a grenade is hurled into his confines, followed by the sinister laughter of Fergal, Orla, and Donal as they enter. Donal (Diarmaid Murtagh) ambushes Elliot with a question, probing if he recognizes him. Elliot, feigning amnesia, responds with a story of an accident that erased his memories.
Fergal, portrayed by Mark McKenna, firmly secures Elliot's hands behind his back, as Elliot confesses ignorance of the McDonnell name. His insulting remarks earn him a swift blow. Undeterred, Fergal persists with his interrogation. Meanwhile, Orla (Nessa Matthews) urges him to hop onto a dating app, suggesting it's a better use of his time. Elliot hastily apologizes for any offense he might have inadvertently caused, but Orla reminds him that his misdeeds are numerous, regardless of his recall. Amidst chuckles about Donal's moniker, Orla strikes him again.
Before departing, Helen intercepts Niamh to converse privately. Their discussion revolves around Elliot, about whom Niamh professes ignorance regarding his whereabouts or his captors. She last saw him seven years ago, aged 27, when his father was hospitalized. His abrupt departure left her puzzled. Niamh inquiries whether Elliot sought her out, prompting Helen to reveal a car crash from a year prior. Niamh reminisces about Elliot's love for a particular song, a relic from his ballet days. A call interrupts their chat, confirming that the DNA on a whiskey bottle aligns with the clothes found in Elliot's belongings, verifying his identity. Upon glancing at a photo of the bottles, a fleeting memory crosses Niamh's mind, yet she remains tight-lipped and hastily exits.
Ruairi retreats to his home, sharing his day's events with his mother, Fiona (Emer Casey), including a quaint conversation about apples. Elsewhere, Slater slips through a concealed doorway, stealthily concealing it behind him, and equips himself with a knife. In a hushed tone, he discusses pork and beans with an unseen companion. Ethan, contemplating his relationship with Helen, suspects she might have left a door ajar, prompting him to book a flight to Ireland.
Helen keeps Niamh Cassidy under surveillance before proceeding to her motel. After checking in, she retreats to her room. Elsewhere, Elliot confides in Donal about his amnesia, prompting Donal to remind him of Tamar – a memory lost to Elliot. Frustrated, Donal strikes Elliot's head and considers shooting him, though Orla reminds him of their agreement. Donal's adherence to the deal seems inconsequential to him. Orla suspects his concern stems from Frank. When alone, Elliot politely asks Fergal for a drink. Fergal obliges, releasing the restraints from behind Elliot's back to tie them in front, allowing him some ease. As Elliot sips the familial recipe liquor, he observes that Fergal harbors less malice towards him than the others, positing that Fergal might not relish the thought of taking a life.
