In the fourth episode of Virgin River season 7, Mel and Jack embark on a list of tasks ahead of their home study visit from the social worker the following day. Jack assures her that he will have everything completed by the time of the visit. Mel expresses her concern that she hasn't informed Vernon about the adoption yet, but Jack reassures her that everything will fall into place, and he is touched when she refers to the baby as theirs.

Lizzie, on the other hand, is filled with anxiety about Koko's first day out. Hope and Denny wonder if she might be pushing herself too hard since they are only going to the clinic. In a separate conversation, Hope asks her new temp assistant, Tony, to drop by Bernadette's place to see why she isn't answering her calls and invite her to the committee meeting for the Founder's Day event.
Meanwhile, Vernon takes up piano practicing to distract himself from his worries. Hope suggests he accepts Walt's invitation to play pickleball and advises him to check in on where he stands with Nick. At Brie's house, Kaia stops by to check on her friend. She asks what's going on with Brady and Mike, and Brie reveals that she is only friends with Brady and is working on finding Charmaine with Mike. Kaia warns her to be careful about her feelings for Brady and vents about Preacher being too busy at the restaurant, mentioning that they will be having dinner with Jaime later that night.
Mike arrives to pick up his things and is offended to see a letter meant for Brady on Brie's kitchen counter. It turns out that Brie is hoping to help Brady with the legal process of opening his new business. Vernon is happy for Mel and says they will figure out what to do about the clinic when the baby comes. Jack calls Everett for help in getting the house ready before the home inspection, and his talk about fatherhood inspires him to do better.During the committee meeting, Hope checked in on Muriel, who was handling chemo better than expected. Tommy arrived and shared that Bernadette was dealing with a mosquito infestation at her farm and couldn't host the annual Founder's Day party. It turned out that Roland had volunteered to host the event, which got under Hope's skin. She had Muriel fake a medical emergency to postpone the vote on the matter. Meanwhile, Vernon slowly got the hang of the pickleball game. He also confronted Nick, who insisted that change was not all bad for the town and that he would always have Vernon's back when it came to it.
At the clinic, Mel advised Denny and Lizzie to figure out a schedule that worked for them. She volunteered to take care of Koko to give them time for a walk. Lizzie congratulated her on being Marley's match and wondered how Mel would manage the clinic and a newborn.
Back in town, Victoria met with an old acquaintance, Mike. She asked him out, and he accepted her offer. On the other side of town, Brie saved Brady from being a victim of fraud by his new landlord.
Later, Mel finally had her interview with Victoria and learned that things were not looking promising for Vernon. It might take at least 6-8 months for Vernon to even get a hearing. Also, Victoria found it concerning that Mel and Jack were planning on adopting one of her clients' babies.
As Jack and Preacher made their way through the grocery store, they encountered one of the local farmers who encouraged Jack to give up his habit of sleeping on the fertile soil of his land. Inspired by Everett's words and observing the farmer's affectionate interaction with his son, Jack decided to invest in a tractor and give farming a try.
After the committee meeting, Hope took Muriel home and finally revealed the reason behind her hatred for Roland and her father. It turned out that Hope felt betrayed when her father chose Roland over her and left the family business in his hands. To make matters worse, Roland sold the company to a big corporation before Hope could contest the will. As they talked, Muriel started feeling sick, and Hope stayed with her for a while.
Later that night, Kaia felt like a third wheel as she listened to Preacher and Jaime discuss food and their plans to become partners. She vented to Brady about it and challenged him to move on. Brady followed her advice and started flirting with a random woman at the bar.
Mel was furious when Jack explained that he had bought a tractor in hopes of turning the land into a farm. He thought it would be good for their family and their town, but Mel accused him of taking the social worker's visit lightly since half of their to-do list remained undone. The two got into a fight, and Mel stormed off.
At the bar, Hope ran into Roland and accused him of being selfish. He, in turn, called her bitter and advised her to at least forgive her dad since things were more complicated than she knew. She went home and vented to Vernon about her day.
Meanwhile, Denny tried to help Lizzie get more sleep by taking care of Koko, but she was unable to sleep due to her anxiety.
The following morning, Mel woke up and realised that Jack had not come home. She received a call from Denny about a patient and asked him to text her the patient's address. Before leaving, she left Jack a voicemail asking to talk before the home study. She made it to her patient's address and was nearly mauled by his dogs.
