In the seventh episode of Will Trent season 4, the scene opens with a woman being brutally attacked and murdered in her own home. The next morning, as Trent arrives at the crime scene, he attempts to mentally reconstruct the murder, but his intrusive thoughts take over, and he envisions himself as the assailant. Faith walks in and informs him that there was no sign of forced entry or robbery, and that the husband was out of town and on his way back from Memphis. Trent deduces that the killer knew Mrs. Hornbaker was alone and wanted her to suffer.

He questions the GBI crime scene specialist about the evidence they have collected, but the man responds that there is nothing. They didn't even find the missing knife that Mrs. Hornbaker had taken from her drawer to defend herself. Faith argues that the killer took it with him. As they continue to work the scene, Paul arrives and insists that he knows the killer. They take him back to the GBI office, where Paul sketches an almost cartoonish image of the killer. As he talks to Trent about what he saw that morning at 4 a.m., he realizes that Paul was having an affair with the victim. Before he can confirm this, the husband storms in, throwing punches and accusing Paul of killing his wife. According to him, Paul killed Joelle after she broke off the affair. However, it doesn't matter as Paul insists he was the one who broke up with her. To make matters worse, they had a break-up sex last night. It seems like Trent has his work cut out for him in this case. However, none of them think Paul is the killer.
Trent tells Amanda that there is something off about the killer. Faith walks in and informs them that the nail gun used to kill Joelle belongs to a murder victim, Brent, from a different open murder case. They quickly realize that they are dealing with a serial killer.
Elsewhere, Ormewood, Franklin, and Angie team up to solve a strange hit-and-run case where the victim is the driver, Benjamin Price. As they work, Franklin and Ormewood express their disappointment that Angie can't participate in their annual softball competition due to her recent pregnancy. She is offended by Franklin's suggestion that she could quickly bounce back after giving birth in just a few weeks.
In the aftermath of the crime scene, they discovered white hair on the bumper, swiftly realizing that Benjamin had succumbed to an allergic reaction caused by pepper spray. A deep dive into his phone revealed his last message was from Luna, inquiring if he was okay after hitting something while driving.
Meanwhile, Faith interviewed Brent's daughter, Sandra, to uncover the truth. She realized that Brent too knew his killer. In the meantime, Trent attempted to uncover the connection between the victims. Unfortunately, Ulster intruded in his mind, helping him understand the killer's mindset. He persistently taunted Trent's dark side, arguing that it was inherent. Once again, Trent found himself painted as the killer. However, through this cognitive process, Trent figured out that there were two killers.
On the other side of the station, Angie and Franklin interviewed Luna. She claimed to have been on a video call with Benjamin when she heard him hit something before he hung up. She added that she heard a woman yelling, "You killed my baby." They began investigating recent accidents while also bugging Angie about letting their softball team down.
Simultaneously, the lab report revealed that the white hair on Benjamin's car belonged to a skunk. Their investigation led them to Daphne, also known as the "skunk mother." She rehabilitates injured skunks and lives just a mile away from the crime scene.
Back to Joelle's case, Trent and Faith deduced that the targets were not personal. They questioned the dynamics of their serial killer duo. Amanda interrupted and showed them a video of Paul pleading for the public's help to find the killer. They rushed to confront Paul and arrived just in time to save him from a drive-by shoot-out. With his life now in danger, Paul moved in with Trent for the time being.
Angie drops by for dinner, and they reminisce about their time in the foster home. Thankfully, Trent quickly corrects him. It gets a bit awkward when Paul assumes Trent and Angie are having a baby. As they talk, Paul mentions that Trent was the one who started their fight back in the foster home. Angie changes the subject, and it eventually turns to how she will bounce back after giving birth.
That night, Trent has another nightmare. He is awakened by a call from a detective from Cobb County. The detective believes they are looking for the same killer from one of his unsolved murder cases. Paul tags along with Trent as he returns to the office to go through the Martin Hill case. Martin was killed with steel hedge clippers that were his. According to the case files, an autographed Deion Sanders baseball bat was stolen from the property. Trent realizes that Martin was the first victim. However, he struggles to find the connection between the victims. He then has another dissociative episode where Ulster continues to haunt him. In the end, he stabs Ulster’s ghost, only for it to turn into the victim. In his state, he nearly hurts Paul, who tries to help him. After calming down, Paul asks why Trent keeps doing this to himself if the job affects him to that extent. After getting more clarity, Trent discovers that the killers find their victims through Anuli Springs water.
In the meantime, Angie and Franklin interview Daphne, who admits that Benjamin accidentally hit one of her skunks. In her anger, she threw a stone at his windscreen when Benjamin got out of his car. In self-defense, she used pepper spray on him and fled. She didn’t notice he was having an allergic attack. Benjamin’s throat was crushed, so someone else must have been there. In Luna’s statement, she had noted that she heard the windscreen break before Benjamin hung up the phone and got out of the car. However, that would have been impossible because Daphne threw the stone after he got out of the car.
They bring back Luna, and she finally confesses that she went to the accident scene and crushed Benjamin’s throat with her foot. She was angry that she was leaving him after he got a job. She felt it was unfair since she had spent years looking after him when he was broke and jobless.
Later, Daphne drops by with one of her skunks, and it accidentally goes loose in the station. Thankfully, the new rookie, Sam, saves the day. Franklin and Ormewood quickly recruit him for their softball team.
In the meantime, Trent and Paul drop by the Anuli water spring office to ask for their delivery driver’s routes. Trent leaves Paul in the car and heads inside. There, he meets Blair Anson at the reception desk. He notices he has a neck bleed and runs a quick image search. The search shows Blair as one of the top Anuli delivery drivers.
Back in the office, Faith uncovers that Travis Nash, a GBI crime scene specialist, falsified and tampered with evidence. The scene cuts to Travis showing up at the Anuli Spring water company and holding Paul at gunpoint. They head inside, and a gun shootout ensues.
Luckily, Trent shoots Anson and, with the help of Paul, overpowers Travis. By the time the GBI arrived, they had the situation under control.
Later, as Paul packs his bags, Trent asks why he used to bully him. Paul reminds him that he was the one who first attacked. Trent realizes that he has been denying his dark side and remembering things wrong. However, Paul reminds him that he is one of the good guys, and that counts for something.
