Wind Breaker – Season 1 Episode 3

Episode 3 of "Wind Breaker" kicks off with an intriguing confrontation between Sakura and Sugishita. In this tense moment, Suo reveals that Sugishita is an avid fangirl of the leader of Bofurin, as well as its other members. His devotion was so profound during middle school that he alone was deemed worthy of being called a member of Bofurin. Therefore, when Sakura expressed his aspiration to reach the pinnacle, it was perceived as a direct affront to "the individual perched atop the throne." This perceived insult fuels Sugishita's attack.

Contrary to everyone's anticipation, Sakura deftly kicks Sugishita, bringing their brawl to an abrupt halt as an announcement echoes through the room. The voice belongs to Hajime Umemiya, Bofurin's esteemed representative. Every soul in the vicinity freezes in respect. Umemiya, with characteristic grace, urges the newcomers to savor the experience, refrain from conflict on their first day, and uphold the integrity of their town.

The entire scenario unfolds in a comically surreal manner as Sugishita, now resembling a devoted follower at a shrine, nods fervently and attempts to wipe the trickle of blood from his face—all while adhering to Umemiya's edict against fighting on the first day. Suo cleverly orchestrates a truce between Sakura and Sugishita, resulting in a somewhat overemotional handshake. Sakura's classmates jump in to commend him for his combat prowess, making him feel valued and an integral part of a new community, akin to finding a second home. With a heartfelt smile, Sakura acknowledges their praise, fully embracing his newfound sense of belonging.

At this precise moment, their elders summoned the class to attention. They encountered Hiragi, the overseer of Sakura's class, who exclaimed about their group's tardiness, counting down to the very millisecond. Sakura immediately recognized him as the one who had saved him and Kotoha. Someone uttered Kotoha's name, prompting Hiragi to hastily hush them up. It seemed that Kotoha and Umemiya shared a certain connection, as Hiragi hinted that if Umemiya were to learn of Kotoha's peril, he would be "coughing up blood" in distress. With that said, Hiragi popped a few pills meant for his upset stomach, whimsically named "gas-kun"! Meanwhile, Nirei, in a comical fashion, jotted down this intriguing tidbit about gas-kun in his Bofurin journal. The entire scene was a masterpiece of comedy, executed with impeccable timing.

Nirei then enlightened Sakura about the hierarchy of Bofurin. Under Umemiya, the Bofurin representative, there were four kings, each serving as the captain of a class in each grade. Hiragi was one of these four and had the responsibility of overseeing Sakura's class. He elaborated that Bofurin was modeled after the four heavenly kings, and Sakura's class belonged to the Tamon team. The classes, led by their captains, then embarked on a patrol of the town, much to Sakura's disappointment who had envisioned a thrilling saga filled with action and drama. Instead, he was hilariously crestfallen to learn that their duties did not entail any battles but rather involved painting over graffiti-laden walls for the shopkeepers and residents.

As the troupe reached the end of one side of the town, divided by a tunnel, Nirei frantically restrained Sakura from crossing it. He revealed that the tunnel served as the boundary between Bofurin and another team called Shishitoren. Unlike Bofurin, Shishitoren was ruthless; their name meant "devotees of power," hinting at their ruthless demeanor.

At this very instant, the group catches sight of a fellow townsfolk, a student with a swollen eye, fleeing in terror from the relentless pursuit of Bofurin members. Sakura and Sugishita, without hesitation, spring into action, delivering a forceful kick to one of the pursuers, to the astonishment of onlookers. Amidst this chaotic scuffle, an imposing figure steps forth – Jo Togame, the second-in-command of Shishitoren and a warrior of formidable might. Despite his menacing aura, Togame maintains a surprising calm demeanor until he unleashes a brutal beating upon their teammate, who had been earlier kicked by the Bofurin duo for showing weakness. Sakura, teetering on the brink of confrontation, is almost provoked into a fight with Togame, but he retreats, vowing to vanquish her at a more suitable juncture.

Following this tumultuous encounter, Hiragi frantically pops handfuls of "gas-kun" pills, their effects presumably intended to steady his nerves. The group then conveys the injured middle schooler to Umemiya, seeking justice. Ascending to the rooftop, they find Umemiya, contrary to the stereotype of a gang leader, cheerfully tending to his vegetables, an image starkly at odds with their expectations. Suo remarks that he resembles a kindergarten child, eliciting gasps of disbelief from the others as the episode draws to a close, leaving them all agape at Umemiya's unexpectedly benign demeanor.
