Wind Breaker – Season 1 Episode 4

Published: May 15 2025

Episode 4 of "The Wind Breaker" kicks off with an intriguing scene where Umemiya, the representative of Bofurin, finds himself engrossed in a monologue about his leafy greens for an extended five minutes, much to Sakura's amusement and eventual realization: Umemiya's penchant for talking endlessly and not listening was the culprit behind Hiragi's tummy troubles! After a series of humorous exchanges centered around vegetables, Sasaki, the boy whose life Bofurin once saved, recounts his encounter with a shoplifter that led him into the territory of Shishitoren. In a thrilling chase, Shishitoren pursued him until Sakura and Sugishita intervened and rescued him. Grateful for his bravery in protecting their city, Umemiya expresses his appreciation, and Sakura marvels at how Umemiya's compassionate leadership inspires everyone around him. When Sakura bursts out with his disdain for Shishitoren, Umemiya playfully ruffles his hair and thanks him for safeguarding his "family," causing Sakura to blush furiously while Sugishita looks on with a hint of envy.

Just as this heartwarming interaction concludes, trouble looms on the horizon. Choji Tomiyama, the impulsive and seemingly juvenile leader of Shishitoren, arrives at Furin High, creating a ruckus by defeating every student in his path. He incessantly challenges Umemiya to a duel, bored and restless after topping Shishitoren's rankings. Tomiyama's presence transforms Umemiya into a stern and responsible leader, a figure Sakura finds hard to rebel against. Soon, more members of Shishitoren arrive, including Jo Togame, the second-in-command. Sakura and his comrades rally under their leader's banner. Tomiyama, thrilled by the prospect of any form of combat, proposes a series of one-on-one battles: Tomiyama versus Umemiya, Togame versus Sakura, and so forth. The challenge is accepted.

Later, at Kohota's café, a gathering place beloved by Bofurin members, Nirei is beside himself with anticipation over the looming battle. Suo elucidates that Kohota's café serves as a pre-fight sanctuary for Bofurin members. As Hiragi and Umemiya enter, Umemiya's demeanor undergoes a striking transformation, revealing an unexpected fanboyish admiration for Kotoha. Their interaction hints at a deeper connection, prompting Kotoha to clarify that they grew up in the same orphanage, with Umemiya adding that she's like a sister to him. Hiragi discreetly informs Sakura that Umemiya's protective instincts towards Kotoha are fierce; if he ever learns she was in danger, he might go to extreme lengths to avenge her. Additionally, Kotoha is revealed to be the same age as Sakura and the other first-year students, 16 years old.

Later on, Hiragi finds himself lost in reminiscence, recalling that the Shishitoren were once a different breed. Battling alongside them once evoked an eerie sense of satisfaction, but since Tomiyama's ascendancy, whispers have circulated like wildfire that the Shishitoren have resorted to enforcing confrontations with brute force. The revelation that Bofurin intends to confront them the following day casts a shadow of impending conflict, as Umemiya elucidates that a fight, in its essence, serves as a discourse—a means to peel away the layers of one's adversary. The subsequent day dawns, and with purposeful strides, Bofurin traverses the bridge, stepping into the Shishitoren's domain, as the episode draws to a cliffhanger close.
