The sixth episode of "Your Friends & Neighbors" kicks off with a dramatic scene as police officers arrive at Sam's residence, their serious expressions revealing the gravity of the situation. They meticulously examine Paul's lifeless body, revealing a solitary gunshot wound to the head and two more to the torso – a tableau that suggests an execution-style killing. However, Detective Lin's sharp mind quickly pieces together that Paul was divorced, casting doubt on an initial interpretation of the scene. Additionally, her keen sense of smell detects ammonia, hinting at a potentially premeditated murder.

Lin's investigative journey then leads her to the neighbors, who recount a heated altercation between Paul and Coop at Nick's place. The detective subsequently brings Sam in for questioning, where her genuine grief, coupled with heartfelt reminisces about her relationship with Paul, is palpable. An intriguing twist emerges when it's revealed that Sam is now the sole beneficiary of a $20 million life insurance policy, instantly granting her a potential motive. She deflects any suggestion of romance outside her marriage, subtly covering for Coop, and hints at Paul's reluctant attempts to rekindle their relationship.

Shifting focus, Sam points the finger at Paul's investors as potential adversaries. Despite Lin's lingering suspicions, Sam's alibi for the night stands up under scrutiny, leaving the police without a solid lead. Nonetheless, Lin's instincts tell her not to trust Samantha completely, prompting her to delve deeper into the mystery surrounding Paul's gun, discovered untouched in his safe and seemingly unfired.

Next, Lin sets her sights on Coop, whose demeanor does little to reassure her. His bruised knuckles, remnants of a fight with Christian, go unmentioned, and he remains tight-lipped about his confrontation with Paul. Suspecting a possible past between Coop and Sam, Lin decides to tread carefully for now. Yet, sensing the heat closing in, Coop takes drastic measures, incinerating any incriminating evidence once Lin departs.

The following day, Coop, Mel, and the kids embark on a road trip to college, their spirits initially high. However, the mood swiftly sours as Tori mercilessly interrogates her father, prompting an emotional confession.

Upon arriving in Princeton, the children seamlessly slip into their routine, leaving Mel and Coop to share an unexpected day together. They indulge in daytime drinking, treat themselves to candy, and Coop finds himself in a heated confrontation with a shopkeeper who falsely accuses Mel of stealing jam – little did anyone know that Mel had actually pocketed it! Meanwhile, Sam makes a pit stop at the pharmacy to gather supplies, while Lin ventures off to visit Nick, just as Elena catches wind of the latest gossip about Paul. Nick, unaware of Mel and Coop's rekindled romance, mockingly labels Coop as weak and hints at his connections to Mel.

Later that evening, Coop unburdens himself to Mel, revealing that he was terminated from his job due to a romantic entanglement. Despite his less-than-ideal circumstances, he expresses regret for neglecting their relationship. Mel, in a compassionate gesture, apologizes for how things had unfolded between them. Their reconciliation leads to an intimate encounter, mirroring Tori's potential romance with Jake – until nausea strikes her, cutting their moment short. Coop steps in to comfort her, dissecting why Jake falls short of her expectations, and they eventually head back home.

However, the night takes a dramatic turn when Coop is assaulted on the streets. Barney, who happens to be nearby, rushes to his aid but unfortunately gets hit by a car in the process. The perpetrator behind this unforeseen tragedy turns out to be Christian, the eccentric artist from the previous episode.
